Pietra Dura Pair

Pietra Dura (hard stones) is an Italian technique of using cut and fitted, highly polished colored stones to create images or designs. Pietra dura was first developed by the Ancient Romans and
since the 16th century Rome and Florence have been well known for the revival of this craft. Many luxurious objects were purchased as grand tour souvenirs well into the 20th century.
Our spectacular and large, 22 inch tall, pair of black marble obelisks are inlaid with many types of marble and semi-precious stones. They date to the last quarter of the 19th century.

Just Three

Recently acquired from a private Swedish Collection, we are pleased to present 3 Disko Metal sculptures by Just Andersen from the 1930s/40s.The tallest is just over 9 inches.
It was Disko Bay in Greenland that inspired the name for the special metal mixture that Danish silversmith Just Andersen invented, disko metal. He took the recipe with him to the grave, so although we don’t know the precise mix that made up the alloy, we do know that it included certain proportions of lead, tin and antimony.
