Fantastic Fantoni

In the 1960s Florence based artist Marcello Fantoni created ceramics in a very Abstract Expressionistic style (think Rothko, but in pottery). The blending of unexpected color combinations in a painterly manner are what give these Italian masterworks their modernist appeal.

Seeing Spots

These are the best kind of cats - no need to feed - sculptural cheetahs from mid-century Italy. The baby has an impressive heft and hand carved quality while the larger scale cat is certainly fierce in its own right.

Friends, Romans, Countrymen

An Art Deco French bronze warrior on a carved limestone base. Circa 1920s, unsigned. Large and imposing at 32 inches tall.
A beautiful example of a 19th century Grand Tour souvenir. This bronze gladiator, after the antique, is inscribed on the base, Louvre, Paris, and most likely sold to an American visitor at the Louvre shop circa 1880, 14 inches tall.
After an original Guerrier a Lance by Julius Paul Schmidt-Felling 1835-1930, an early 20th century German bronze statue of a warrior and lance, 16 inches tall. the naturalistic base incised Schmidt Felling.

Buddha of Italia

A signed Zaccagnini Buddha, beautifully rendered in mid-century Italy. An uncommonly large size at 13" tall. There is a peaceful quality to his expression. A lovely decoration for bringing zen into the home.

Earthy Bitossi

Always a delight to discover a new colorway from Bitossi. This pattern and color palette is very Italian - something the House of Missoni would certainly approve of. Striped and textured in earth tones - exquisitely detailed incising is at play on close inspection. Made in Italy in the mid-century.

Modern Classic

One Vase/Four Femmes
This mid-century take on a classical vessel is an Italian hand carved terracotta vase with a deep blue interior glaze. The sensual bathing beauties are sgraffito in relief to the rough brown and olive background. They are realized in a certain illustrative style popular at the time (think Warhol). While their bodies are the natural color of the clay the fabric details are beautifully saturated red and blue glaze, adding to the 3-dimentional effect. Made by Fabbrini, 1950s
