Tip Top Taisho

Once again we find ourselves at Yamanaka & Co. on 5th Avenue and 28th Street, the year is 1920 and presented for sale is a sleek black enameled table box with a carved agate flower decorating the lid.
At once an early example of Art Deco chic, with a strong minimal Japanese sensibility.
From 1895, Yamanaka & Co. established itself in New York as a purveyor of the finest Japanese art that was in high demand in fin de siècle London, Paris & New York.
The firm, especially Yamanaka Sadajirō (1866-1936), played a crucial role in shaping the Japanese art collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and worked closely with many prominent New York collectors and patrons. Many pieces of Japanese art in North American museums today were originally sold from their 5th Avenue galley.

Paris or Rome?

A very fine pair of mid 19th Century "Grand Tour" bronze and marble urns in the Roman style. Made as souvenirs for wealthy travelers in the 18th and 19th Century visiting the excavations at Pompeii and other sites throughout Europe.
Our pair are 17 inches tall and most likely French or Italian, 1850-1880

Isn't She Lovely?

In the manner of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec as seen through the eyes of a 1960s Italian ceramicist. A very large floor vase or a perfect holder for your parasols and canes at 19" tall.
Guaranteed to to offend design purists and minimalists, (one of the many reasons I love her) this coquettish fin de siècle Jolie mademoiselle is having the last laugh in an overly styled modernist world.

Cannister Collective

A gorgeous grouping of Italian lidded jars from the 1960s. It tones of blue from teal to turquoise, a mod collection for the modern home. Great as decoration, but could be used in a kitchen or the powder-room.

Beautiful Bitossi

An unusual footed form from Italy's Bitossi, 1950s.  Incised inside and out with their signature symbols, revealing a canary yellow underglaze. This bowl has 5 conical shaped feet giving it a 4" rise. This would be a sweet fruit bowl, but interesting enough as a bright  stand alone mid-century object.
9" in diameter.

Happy Chinese New Year!

It's The Year of The Monkey - Ours is a 1952 Knud Kyhn for Royal Copenhagen in his signature Sung Glaze (a Danish take on a Chinese finish). The primate seems to be contemplating the proverbial Bird in The Hand. He is flanked by a pair of genuine Chinese Peking Vases, circa 1920.
All around 10"
